KOS-MOS is a female battle android developed by Vector Industries (the largest business conglomerate in the Galaxy Federation) that had been built to deal with gnosis - alien-like entities that are hostile against humans. Despite the Xenosaga world relying mostly on Realians (aritficial humans) that were created organically, KOS-MOS is composed of entirely mechanical parts, thus making her pretty rare.

In order to combat the gnosis she was manufactured with superhuman strength and speed, the ability to change her arms into weapons (the r-cannon and r-blade), a Hilbert Effect projector, (an anti-gnosis system used to draw gnosis into the human plane of reality so that they can be attacked. Short-range, the Hilbert Effect can disable many high-end sensors using cross-interference. KOS-MOS's projector is far, far more powerful than the ones equipped in Observational Realians and starships) and the x-buster (a weapon in her abdomen that allows her to absorb gnosis and fire blue energy beams). She also has a long-range sensory array, the D.S.S.S. system (an advanced enemy sensor system) and a CPU that either rivals or exceeds even those possessed by Observational Realians (Realians that aren't used for combat, but for things like interacting with starship systems and scanning for gnosis). Finally, she also has two tertiary gatling guns, and a set of energy wings. Her body is able to self-repair to an extent, and is durable, but not indestructible.

Despite all of this, KOS-MOS's database still contains many black boxes that were made by her original creator, Kevin Winnicot. It is unknown how many there are, or what they can all do, but examples of the black boxes being utilized have been seen in the blue-eyed KOS-MOS - an alternate persona that comes out in certain situations. (KOS-MOS's eyes are normally red.) The blue-eyed KOS-MOS has only appeared in the game a few times, and seems to speak with a more human-sounding voice. The only two lines she has ever uttered are, "Will feeling pain make me complete?" and later on, "Relinquish your pain…unto me…" She appears to be more powerful than the red-eyed KOS-MOS, though it seems almost everyone is oblivious to her existence.

Being a weapon, KOS-MOS's basic personality is based upon logic and probability, and completing her mission. She's equipped with a simulated personality OS in order to better communicate with humans, but it's hard to tell sometimes due to her adherence to logic, which makes her difficult to deal with. Her main directives are to protect all employees of Vector Industries (especially Shion, her co-creator), and to eliminate gnosis.
